Implant-Supported Restorations
Dental implants are the ideal solution for replacing missing teeth. These small titanium rods are surgically inserted into the jawbone to provide solid, long-term support for various types of replacement teeth. A restoration (crown or bridge) or prosthesis can then be fitted.
At Clinique Dentaire Dr Wayne Dionne in Edmundston, we'll be with you every step of the way, from the initial evaluation to the installation of your implant-supported restoration (or prosthesis), so you can enjoy a beautiful, fully functional smile.
Why are dental implants a good alternative?
Dental implants are small titanium rods inserted into the jawbone. During the post-surgical healing period, they fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration. An abutment is then inserted to link this artificial root (the implant) to one or more replacement teeth (a crown, bridge or prosthesis). Implants provide stable, solid support for the restoration, enhancing the comfort and esthetics of tooth replacements. What's more, the presence of rods stimulates the bone in the same way as natural roots, preventing it from losing mass and volume.

Different implant-supported restorations for different situations
Crowns on implants
An implant-supported crown is an artificial ceramic or porcelain tooth screwed directly onto an implant. It is usually used to replace a single tooth. Unlike the fixed bridge, the other option for filling such a single gap, it can be used anywhere in the mouth, since it requires no abutments. It also avoids the alteration of adjacent teeth required for a traditional bridge. This option can also be used to replace several teeth located far apart. In this case, different implants are placed, each of which will be fitted with a crown. In the case of a large number of missing teeth or teeth that follow one another, different options (bridge or prosthesis) are preferred.
The implant bridge
This restoration is used to replace an average of three or four teeth. It consists of one or two replacement teeth "suspended" between crowns that are attached to supporting implants. In this way, it is not necessary to install as many titanium rods as teeth to be replaced.
Implant-supported prosthesis
Like the traditional prosthesis, it consists of artificial teeth mounted on a pink acrylic base that mimics the gums. However, it has anchors that enable it to be permanently or removably attached to implants, depending on the model. As a result, it stays securely in place, avoiding inelegant movements and irritation, while enhancing masticatory capacity. Two types are available:
- Implant-supported partial dentures: Used to replace a series of missing teeth. It is attached to a number of implants that vary according to its size and the location of the gaps to be filled.
- Implant-supported full dentures: Replaces the entire dentition of a jaw. Depending on the model (type of anchorage, removable or fixed, etc.), the person's anatomy and the jaw in which it is installed, 4 to 6 implants are generally required to support it.
